Tandem: The future of transport outside big cities

Tandem is creating the future of mobility for towns and small cities. Almost all mobility technology companies focus on huge cities like Berlin, London or New York. Yet more than half the population lives in smaller cities, towns and more rural areas. Tandem is focused on building solutions specifically for those smaller geographies.

The team is based in the UK and their first site is the county of Northamptonshire. Their first services launched in October 2019 and they have done 3000 journeys since then – focused on taking people to work in shared taxi shuttles.

Alex, CEO, has grown startups focused on similar communities before. Huw, CTO, is an experienced startup technologist and was most-recently CTO at HireUp (Australia’s fastest growing startup in 2017). Tatseng, COO, has a range of commercial experience from his time in management consulting and early-stage investing.

Tandem partners with existing local taxi companies and offers software to turn their vehicles into shared, micro shuttles that operate on a demand-responsive basis. A key element of the service is that when nobody travels, there is zero cost. Taxis are only dispatched when there are passengers booked on to the service.

The team works to ensure that passengers pay the same amount regardless of whether they are sharing with one person or seven other passengers, so that they can rely on their service every day. The first customers are low-income, blue-collar workers trying to get to out-of-town employment sites where there are no buses.

The services are focused on ‘corridors’ of demand – where there is a good chance of passengers being able to share, even where the overall population is small.

Tandem aims to support a wider range of users as the team scales and are confident that their approach can be applied to a wide range of contexts.

Hi-Reach has helped Tandem to see the opportunities to replicate their model across Europe. Many of the challenges in the UK are similar across other European countries and the team is excited at the opportunity to take their approach to other locations. They are keen to speak to municipalities across Europe who might be interested in piloting their solution.
